Colorado does it again!

From the Denver Business journal article by

Denver often finds itself among the top places to live, work and play, and now the state of Colorado has some bragging rights, too.

The Centennial State ranks ninth in the nation among the 50 states in U.S. News & World Report’s inaugural “best states” ranking, released Tuesday.

The honor comes less than one month after U.S. News ranked Denver the second-best city in the nation in which to live, and about a year after the New York-based news magazine said the Mile High was the No. 1 city to live in its inaugural “best places” ranking.

To compile the best-states ranking, U.S. News tapped McKinsey & Co.’s Leading States Index, which combines thousands of data points across 68 specific metrics. The metrics pull from government data and were weighted based on a national survey asking people to prioritize what makes a state great.

The metrics calculated are:

  • Health care, including quality and access.
  • Education, including preschool and K-12 and higher education.
  • Infrastructure, including transportation, energy and internet access.
  • Crime and corrections, including public safety.
  • Opportunity, including economic opportunity, equality and affordability.
  • Economy, including growth, employment and business environment.
  • Government, including fiscal stability, government digitalization, budget transparency and state integrity.

With strong employment and growth, Colorado ranks No. 1 in the nation for its economy in particular. It also ranks well for health care (11th), infrastructure (seventh) and government (13th). It ranked 18th for education.

Colorado struggled in crime & corrections (26th) and opportunity (31st), both of which pulled down the state’s overall ranking.
